Walk to Emmaus

Emmaus Walk

The Experience

Are you are enjoying your new life in Christ, but you think there might be “something more” waiting for you?  Whether you are looking for that “mountain-top experience” or are looking for affirmation to your faith, the Walk to Emmaus Weekend could be for you.  These “walks” or “pilgrimages” take place at either Broad Street United Methodist Church in downtown Columbus or at Church of Messiah in Westerville three times a year.  Men and women attend at separate times.  During these 72 hours, you will hear talks on the faith journeys of others, do fun activities, sing lots of songs, experience lots of laughter and prayer.  You will laugh until you cry, and we eat more food than you think is humanly possible, all the while you will discover how God's grace is real in your life and how you can live in a life full of His grace.

We take as our Scripture for the weekend Luke 24:13-35 where is relates the story of the risen Christ appearing to the two disciples who were walking the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. They were sharing their hearts' deepest concerns when the risen Christ joined them. He explained the scriptures as they walked, and their hearts were warmed.

Those who attend Emmaus are encouraged to do several things following their weekend: First, small groups are encouraged to form and meet weekly to support the members' quest for spiritual growth and to uphold one another in prayer and accountability. At Riverside, currently three Share Groups meet, whereas others have formed groups in their workplace, or in some other location.  Second, a monthly praise and worship service, called a "gathering," is held, and all those who have attended the Emmaus walk are invited to sing, pray, worship, and fellowship with one another. There also are opportunities to serve outside Riverside by becoming a member of a team for the next Men’s or Women’s Walk.  Others feel called to bring hope and the message of Jesus Christ through “Kairos” teams, which serve our prison population in Ohio men’s and women’s prisons.

Christ is counting on us to help you live a more abundant life through Him.  To attend an Emmaus walk, you must have a sponsor - someone who has previously attended the weekend and is willing to support you in love, prayer and service.

If you know someone who has attended the walk, please feel free to talk to him/her, or for more information, please contact Doris Fick, 457-3010 or Jean Hayward, 457-0062
